PADOVAFOTO: Urban Portraits in Padua
Project and Photographs by Giorgio Viali

The PADOVAFOTO project was launched in September 2024 with the aim of capturing the essence of daily life in Padua through authentic and spontaneous urban portraits. After celebrating its first two years in September 2026, the project enters its third year of activity, continuing to explore the relationship between people, the city, and photography.

Methodology

  • Capturing people in their daily routines
The goal is to approach without intrusion, respecting the moments of life of those encountered on the street.

  • Asking for permission
Before taking a photograph, consent is always requested, fostering an interaction based on mutual willingness.

  • Brief and respectful interaction
The communication lasts only a few minutes, encouraging an authentic dialogue between photographer and subject.

  • Social and political interaction
Photography becomes a tool for dialogue and reflection on the relationship between the individual and public space.

  • Alternative perspective
Offering people the chance to see themselves through a different lens, promoting new encounters and perspectives.

Meaning and Impact

  • Photography transforms into an urban service, actively engaging with the city fabric and its inhabitants.

  • It creates a moment of encounter that goes beyond the superficiality of digital shots or selfies on social media.
Moving away from passivity, it enters a process of genuine sharing.

  • CONSENSUAL STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
Respect and consent underpin every shot, ensuring dignity and authenticity in each portrait.

Project’s Goal

To reveal the hidden humanity within the streets of Padua, creating an archive of urban portraits that tell stories of life, identity, and integration through a respectful and empathetic perspective.
